xPON Standards
FTTH >> Technology >> Systems for FTTH optical access

Making a chronological pursuit we found the following standards for networks xPON based on recommendations ITU-T G.983, ITU-T G.984 and IEEE 802.a'h
Recommendation: ITU-T G.983
APON (ATM Passive Optical Network):Esta was the first standard of passive network, it was used mainly for applications of companies and was based on transmission of traffic ATM. BPON (Broadband PON), is a standard based on APON contributed to new improvements like the multiplexación by wavelength or WDM, increasing this way the bandwidth.
Recommendation ITU-T G.984
GPON (Gigabit PON): It is a evolution of BPON, allowing an optimization of the transmission of traffic IP and ATM by means of cells of variable size.
IEEE Recommendation 802.a'h
EPON (Ethernet PON): The main characteristic is that it transports native traffic of network Ethernet instead of classic traffic ATM. Traffic IP is optimized, the security improves and supports greater speeds of data transmission.
The basic characteristicses of the exposed standards previously can be appreciated in the following picture summarize:
