PON, Passive Optical Networks
FTTH >> Technology >> Systems for FTTH optical access

A passive optical communications net is a network configuration that by its characteristics provides a great variety with services of broadband to the users by means of optical fiber accesses.
The use of passive architectures allows to reduce the costs and are used mainly in networks FTTH. By counterpart, the bandwidth is not dedicated, but multiplexado in a same fiber in the joining points of network of the users. Really, a configuration is point-multipoint network.
Advancing from the network towards the user we can say that a network architecture PON is formed by the following equipment: a Terminator of Optical network (OLT, Optical Line Termination) in the local power station of the supplier of services and a series of Optical Units of Network (the UN, Optical Units Network) next to the access users.
